IPOH: While thanking all educators for imparting their knowledge to students, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong paid tribute to two former teachers who had taught him when he was studying in Jasin, Melaka.

The Transport Minister uploaded photographs of himself with Thooi Yuit Gor and Zainal Ali on his Instagram page, thanking both for guiding him when he was a student at SJKC Yu Hsien and SMK Datuk Bendahara respectively.

Thooi taught him when he was in Year One at SJKC Yu Hsien in 1975.

“She was stern but caring. It was normal to see her using the cane.

“If a pupil went home and complained about being caned at school, they would get caned again by their parents. It was better not to complain. Back then, pupils’ parents gave the cane to the teachers.

“Caning a pupil when they did something wrong was to educate them, as long as it did not cause injuries, ” he said.

On Zainal, Dr Wee said he was close to the former mathematics teacher and scoutmaster when he was at SMK Datuk Bendahara.

“When he got married, I was at the bride’s house to help. He guided me until I got my King’s Scout Award in 1986, ” he said, adding that he would not be as he is without their guidance.

Dr Wee also paid homage to all teachers in a Facebook post in conjunction with Teachers’ Day.

“The sacrifices of a teacher is akin to a burning candle that lights up the students’ lives, which we are forever grateful for, ” he said.

Dr Wee also paid tribute to his “teacher”, Datuk Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir, who is now the secretary-general of the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry.
