Party's over: Cops raid shophouse, 52 arrested in Kulai


KULAI: A total of 52 people were arrested during a police raid at a party in at a shophouse here.

Kulai OCPD Supt Tok Beng Yeow said the suspects, five locals and 47 foreigners, were arrested during a raid at 12.01am on Sunday (May 16) at the shophouse on Jalan Cyber 16 in the Senai Industrial area.

"Police from the Senai International Airport station heard loud music being played along with running lights when checking the shophouse," he said.

He added that the foreigners were nationals from Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Myanmar and Bangladesh and they were also found drinking alcohol and not practising physical distancing.

"A man manning the counter at the shophouse was also arrested along with his customers," he said in a statement here on Sunday (May 16).

He added that the suspects, aged from 20 to 46, would be remanded for four days starting from Sunday for further investigation.

"We also seized items such as a television, a modem, a music mixer, a speaker, two sets of microphones as well as a book with records of customers' loans," he said, adding that the shophouse was believed to have been illegally turned into an entertainment centre.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 269 of the Penal Code, Section 6(2) of the Johor Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment, Section 55B and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act as well as the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2021.
