Bid to smuggle Indonesian woman in car boot foiled

ALOR GAJAH: Cops have foiled an attempt by a 27-year-old e-hailing driver to smuggle in an Indonesian woman who wanted to spend Hari Raya with her husband here after having not met him for over a year.

Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Arshad Abu said during the 2.30pm incident yesterday, police asked the driver to open the boot of his car at the roadblock in Simpang Ampat Toll Plaza here and caught the woman hiding inside.

He said the 28-year-old woman, who is an illegal immigrant, told the police that she wanted to be with her husband in Rembia here during the festive season.

“She claimed she has not met her Indonesian husband for more than a year and she misses him, ” he said.

Supt Arshad said the woman had booked the car and made the trip from Nilai in Negri Sembilan and hid in the boot before reaching the toll plaza.

Personnel manning the roadblock found the driver acting suspiciously and checked the boot, he added.

Supt Arshad said the e-hailing driver now faced an investigation under Section 56 (1) (d) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for harbouring an illegal as well as the Emergency (Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021.

The driver, from Seremban, was currently under questioning, said Supt Arshad.
