Retiree loses life savings to loan scam

MELAKA: A retiree applied for a loan to celebrate Hari Raya with his grandchildren but ended up losing his entire savings of RM14,000, leaving him penniless. This has caused him to be depressed especially since he can’t celebrate with his loved ones due to the interstate travel ban as well.

Melaka Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt E. Sundra Rajan said the 80-year-old was offered a personal loan with low interest rate via SMS last month.

“The victim applied for RM10,000 but ended up paying RM14,320 in so-called processing fees, ” he said.

Supt Sundra said the victim’s wife transferred the money into several bank accounts provided by the scammer last Wednesday.

The victim lodged a police report on Saturday after realising he had been conned.
