EC: Melor by-election postponed due to Emergency

PUTRAJAYA: A by-election to fill the vacancy for the Melor state seat has been postponed in view of the Emergency, said the Election Commission (EC).

EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said according to Article 46(5) of the Kelantan state constitution, a vacancy in a seat in the state legislative assembly needs to be filled within 60 days from the date the seat is declared vacant.

“However, following a proclamation of a state of Emergency by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and according to provisions under Section 13 of the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021, the by-election for the Melor state seat in Kelantan is postponed, ” he said in a statement Tuesday (May 4).

Ikmalrudin said the EC had received an official notification from the Kelantan Speaker Datuk Abdullah Yakub on May 3 regarding the vacancy of the seat following the death of its assemblyman Dr Md Yusnan Yusof on April 30.

The two-term PAS representative passed away at his home in Ketereh. He was 53.

Yusnan was first elected Melor assemblyman in 2013 and retained the seat in 2018.
