JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested a jobless man who is suspected of setting a house on fire on Friday (April 30) at around 12.15am.
Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Padzil Mohd Zain said the 65-year old man was also the tenant of the single-storey house in Jalan Maju 3, Taman Pelangi, near here.
“We received a distress call from a woman informing us of the fire and asking for assistance from firefighters and the police," he said on Friday.
ACP Padzil said police are looking for witnesses to assist with the investigation.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code/25 (1) (n) National Registration Rules 1990 for causing mischief by fire with intent to destroy.
Larkin Fire Rescue and Department deputy chief Suhaimi Abdul Jamal said the department received a call at around 12.10am.
He said the department deployed two Fire Rescue Tender vehicles, one water tanker, two Emergency Medical Rescue Service vehicles and a utility vehicle.
“A team of 28 from the Larkin and Tebrau fire stations was involved in the operation," he said, adding that the house was about 80% destroyed.
A neighbouring house sustained about 10% damage, he added.
The operation to put out the fire ended at around 1.44am.
