KOTA KINABALU: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been inked between Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry’s (Motac) National Visual Arts Development Board here.

UMS Pro-Chancellor and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor witnessed the signing with Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri at the state administration centre here on Thursday (April 22).

The MoU is aimed at initiating collaboration to boost visual arts development via the Azman Hashim Gallery at the university campus.

Tan Sri Azman Hashim - who is also Pro-Chancellor for the university - had contributed RM15mil for the gallery which was completed last year. It will function as a one-stop centre for exhibitions, programmes, symposiums and conferences relating to visual arts.

In a statement, Nancy said they hoped the arts industry in Sabah can be expanded to supplement the tourism sector here, where the gallery is hoped to become another attraction to arts enthusiasts.

During the signing of the MOU, UMS was represented by its deputy, Vice-Chancellor Assoc Prof Dr Raman Noordin and gallery director Sarlona Gindug, while the Board was represented by director-general Amerrudin Ahmad and his deputy Alizam Hasan.

With the collaboration, the expertise of the Board as well as data on visual arts, can now be shared through the Azman Hashim Gallery, said Nancy.

Earlier, Nancy, who is on a working visit to Sabah, paid a courtesy call to Hajiji at his office.
