Man who drove against flow of traffic in Penang dies


BUTTERWORTH: The 43-year-old man who drove his car against the flow of traffic on April 14 has died due to injuries sustained in the accident.

North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the man passed away at the Seberang Jaya Hospital on Thursday (April 22) around 12.30am.

He added that the driver of the other car involved in the accident is still receiving treatment, while his three-year-old daughter has since been discharged. It is learnt that the 31-year-old wife of the driver succumbed to multiple organ damage on Saturday (April 17).

ACP Noorzainy said the post-mortem carried out at the hospital's forensic unit showed that the man died due to injuries and organ failure sustained in the accident.

On April 14, a family of three and one other person were rushed to the Seberang Jaya Hospital here with serious injuries following an accident involving three vehicles at 8.20pm at KM13 of the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR).

ACP Noorzainy said investigations revealed that the crash happened when the 43-year-old man was heading from Bagan Ajam towards Sungai Dua.

"It is believed he drove his car against the flow of traffic before grazing an oncoming motorcycle and colliding with an oncoming car. The 24-year-old motorcyclist and 28-year-old pillion rider escaped unhurt, ” he said.

Meanwhile, ACP Noorzainy advised road users to be careful and always comply with traffic rules.

He also urged those who witnessed the accident to come forward to assist in the investigation.

“They can contact the investigation officer at 018-288 1424 or head to the nearest police station to facilitate investigations, ” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Department 1987.
