Ministry denies instructing staff to 'like', 'follow' minister, officials on social media

PETALING JAYA: There were no instructions issued to Communications and Multimedia Ministry staff that they must "like","share" and "follow" social media accounts belonging to its minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah (pic).

"The minister did not issue any instruction to do so," the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday (April 21).

However, it added that staff members are encouraged to share valid information on social media.

The ministry denied issuing a circular that went viral on Facebook on Tuesday (April 20), claiming that the instructions came from Saifuddin.

The viral post alleged that ministry staff were ordered to follow pages belonging to Saifuddin as well as Deputy Minister Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin and its secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Mentek.

The post also alleged that the decision to issue the instruction last month came after a senior management meeting within the ministry and instructions were also given to division directors to monitor their subordinates' social media accounts to see if they complied.
