Cops arrest 19 in Kepala Batas in anti-gambling op

KEPALA BATAS: Police here have arrested 19 suspects allegedly involved in illegal gambling in the district in an operation code-named "Ops Dadu”, says North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor.

He said the 12 men and seven women, aged between 22 and 48, were arrested at 12 different premises raided by Bukit Aman and the North Seberang Prai D7 police team in the Butterworth and Mak Mandin areas on April 11.

"Those arrested were believed to have been working at these sites as bookies and caretakers, ” said ACP Noorzainy, adding that these premises had been raided several times in the past two years.

He added in a statement on Monday (April 19) that the police officers conducting the raids found the premises appeared to house legal businesses such as phone shops and coffee shops but were also openly running illegal lottery operations.

Some of the suspects ran the betting from their cars, he added.

ACP Noorzainy said four customers buying lottery tickets were also arrested in the raids.

He added that a calculator, a car, a CCTV decoder and RM13,581 in cash were among the seized items from the suspects.

The case is being investigated under Section 4A (a) of the Open Gambling House Act 1953.
