SHAH ALAM: Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari says he leaves it to the PKR leadership if they want to pit him against former boss Datuk Seri Azmin Ali in the Gombak parliamentary constituency.
“I have to discuss it with the party president (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), the party leadership and members. Whatever the decision is, I will obey, ’’ he said here yesterday.
If Amirudin, who is the Sungai Tua assemblyman which is under the Gombak seat, is indeed directed to contest the seat, he would be going against his mentor Azmin who was Selangor Mentri Besar before passing the baton to him after he was made a minister in the Pakatan Harapan government in 2018.
Azmin is the International Trade and Industry Minister in the Perikatan Nasional government.Speaking to reporters after launching the Selangor Smart Digital Infrastructure at Menara BSN, Amirudin said his current priority was to strategise ways to ensure the smooth running of the state government.
“But I can definitely say that I will never jump party, ’’ he added.
PKR central leadership council member Datuk Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid said although the party had not decided on its candidate for Gombak, Amirudin should be prepared to contest there.
“He is currently the PKR coordinator in the Gombak parliamentary constituency and so who else besides him is likely to be the candidate?” asked the Kapar MP.
He claimed it would be “easy” for Amirudin to emerge the winner in Gombak.
“Azmin’s win all these years relied on the support the electorate gave PKR. That has changed now, ” he added.
However, PKR veteran group Otai Reformis secretary Abdul Razak Ismail said it would not be a good idea to pit Amirudin against Azmin in Gombak as the MB might not go all out.
Selayang MP William Leong said it was too early to decide if Amirudin should contest in Gombak but added that the MB had a firm footing in the constituency as he belonged to the Gombak division.
