12 illegal betting centres busted

BUTTERWORTH: Police have busted 12 illegal lottery betting centres during separate raids in north Seberang Prai and arrested 19 people.

In an operation codenamed Ops Dadu from noon to 7pm on Sunday, police detained 12 men and seven women aged between 22 and 58.

North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the raids were carried out on illegal public lottery betting activities in different locations such as private properties, rented premises, coffee shops, telephone stores, leisure areas and private vehicles.

“During the raids, we found three men and a woman who were all involved in such activities for the past two years and they were detained in previous raids, ” he said.

ACP Noorzainy said police seized RM13,581 in cash, a Toyota Vios, a CCTV decoder, 14 units of smartphones, five mobile printers and other betting paraphernalia.

“In combating such activities, we cooperate closely with Tenaga Nasional Bhd by cutting their power supply whilst raiding and arresting the individuals involved.

“So far, we have cut off the power supply at some 47 illegal gambling dens in 2020 and this year.

“We will continue to take such actions from time to time to prevent such activities from becoming rampant in the district, ” he said.
