Jeck Seng: Registration for vaccination still low in Pontian

PONTIAN: The number of those who have registered for the Covid-19 vaccination is still low in this district, with only 32% signing up for the immunisation.

Deputy Primary Industry and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng, who is the Tanjung Piai MP, said many had yet to take the initiative to register for the vaccination.

He said the number for the state of Johor was also not encouraging, with only 36% of the overall population, aged 18 and above, having registered for the vaccination.

“From what I understand, those who have not registered are not just senior citizens. I hope more Malaysian will register soon via the MySejahtera application and other channels, ” he said at the Malaysia Prihatin programme at Taman Saujana yesterday.

He said the event, organised by the Information Department, was aimed at disseminating accurate information about the Covid-19 pandemic, which was crucial in instilling public confidence on the vaccination.

He also said public servants should be well-informed about the government’s initiatives and the vaccination in order to provide the public with the correct information.

“Public servants have the responsibility to help the government reach out to the rakyat all over the country and convince them to register for the vaccination programme in order to achieve the 70% targeted immunisation by this year, ” he said.

“Politicians from both sides of the divide should also stop politicking and focus their energy on increasing the registration for the vaccination programme.

“During these tough times, we should focus on the pandemic and help the rakyat who have been struggling to make ends meet.

“As Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said, he will dissolve Parliament once the Covid-19 situation eases – that will be the time for politicians to engage in political activities but the time (for politicking) is not now.”

He said four locations in Pontian had been designated as vaccination centres, namely the Pontian Dewan Jubli Intan, Pekan Nenas MDP hall, Benut MDP hall and Perpat Timbul multipurpose hall in Serkat.
