IPOH: Four special secretaries to the Perak Mentri Besar will be appointed to look into matters related to the Chinese, Indian, Sikh and Orang Asli communities.
Perak MB Datuk Saarani Mohamad (pic) said the state had already appointed two individuals to handle issues related to the Chinese and Indian communities.
Saarani, who oversees matters related to non-Islamic affairs, said state MIC chief Datuk V. Elango and former state Non-Islamic Affairs Committee deputy head Choong Shin Heng had already started their duties.
"We are currently looking for (candidates to fill) the two remaining positions.
"We will announce the names soon," he told reporters after attending the appointment of Perak Youth assembly members at a hotel here on Sunday (April 11).
Elango in December last year remarked that there was a need to appoint special officers or advisers to to address issues faced by the respective communities.
Elango was formerly the special adviser of Indian affairs to former Perak mentri besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir while Choong was the former special officer to state MCA chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.
Saarani said the state had changed the name of the state non-Islamic affairs unit to "Community Integration and Strengthening Unit".
"Previously, matters regarding the Orang Asli community were also under the unit.
"However, we realised that there are Orang Asli in the state who are Muslims. This might cause differences and overlap," he said.
