Man pleads not guilty to molesting granddaughter

JOHOR BARU: A senior citizen has claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to two charges of molesting his eight-year-old granddaughter.

The 74-year-old man pleaded not guilty in front of Sessions Judge Wan Mohd Norisham Wan Yaakob after the two charges were read out to him in Mandarin here on Sunday (April 11).

Based on the charge sheet, the unemployed man allegedly committed the offence at a house along Jalan Bukit Impian in Taman Impian Emas near Skudai at around 6pm on March 6.

In the first charge, the accused was charged with molesting the victim by making the child touch herself, an offence under Section 14(c) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act.

In the second charge, he had allegedly inserted his finger inside the victim's private parts and was charged under Section 14(d) of the same Act.

Both offences carry a maximum imprisonment of not more than 20 years and whipping upon conviction.

Wan Mohd Norisham did not allow bail on grounds that the accused and victim were staying at the same house.

He also advised the accused to hire a lawyer before setting June 2 as the next case mention.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Edelynn Wong prosecuted the case.
