Council of elders to be set up to help sustain Melaka Portuguese community traditions

MELAKA: The Melaka Portuguese community will set up a council of elders to act as an advisory board, says community elder Joseph Sta Maria.

He also said the new body will be known as the “Council of Elders of the Melaka Portuguese community" (CEMPC).

"CEMPC will include former regidors (village heads) and senior leaders who had served the community in the past," he said Sunday (April 4).

Sta Maria said CEMPC will function collectively in sustaining the community's centuries-old traditions.

"The culture and traditions must be retained in a bid to preserve the community's identity," he said.

Sta Maria added that a list of CEMPC members would be made public soon.
