Umno veep Mahdzir not aware Kelantan Umno cut ties with Bersatu, decision to stick with Perikatan til GE15 still stands

IPOH: Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid is unaware of a decision by Kelantan Umno officially cutting ties with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

He said he has yet to read the news on this development.

"From what I understand from the supreme council meeting, all (Umno) MPs will continue with Perikatan Nasional until Parliament is dissolved, ” he told reporters after presenting a cheque on behalf of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Saarani Mohamad.

Mahdzir, who is TNB chairman, presented the cheque for RM380,000 to Saarani under its Ceria Ke Sekolah programme at a hotel here on Wednesday (March 24).

Kelantan Umno secretary Akbar Salim had issued a statement earlier in the day stating that the state chapter has officially cut ties with Bersatu, with 12 out of 13 divisions supporting a motion to do so.

In the statement, Akbar also told PAS to decide whether it would work with Umno or Bersatu in the 15th General Election.

On party members making statements not in line with the top leadership's directives, Mahdzir said it was nothing new.

“It was the same during Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s time.

“I feel at times it is not necessary. Let the individuals who have been given the responsibility speak.

“Contradictions can drag us into an unpleasant situation, ” he said.
