GOMBAK: A 25-year-old male e-hailing driver was arrested for allegedly stealing from a 23-year-old female passenger and outraging her modesty.

Gombak OCPD Asst Comm Arifai Tarawe said that the victim used the e-hailing service to get from her workplace at Solaris Hartamas at about 6.30pm on Thursday (March 18), but the driver brought her to a waterfall near Sungai Tua, Batu Caves.

"The suspect stopped the vehicle before pulling her hands, forcing her to lie down. He then got on top of the victim before covering her mouth with his hands and then grabbed the victim's mobile phone," he said when contacted on Saturday (March 20).

ACP Arifai added that the suspect also attempted to take off the victim's clothing, but was unsuccessful as she managed to struggle free and run to nearby residents for help.

"She then lodged a police report," he said.

ACP Arifai added that the suspect was arrested on Friday (March 19) when he went to Selayang police station to give a statement.

"We will be remanding the suspect. He has past criminal records," he added.

He advised the public to be careful when using e-hailing services to avoid being a victim of crime.

"Get details of the vehicle and inform family members or acquaintances before taking the ride as a precautionary measure," he said.
