KUCHING: The Sarawak disaster management committee has decided to allow the Qing Ming festival to be observed with adherence to standard operating procedures (SOP).

The committee said the public could observe rituals at cemeteries between 4am and noon from March 20 to April 14.

"Detailed SOP will be made available on the Unit for Other Religions' (Unifor) website," it said in a statement Wednesday (March 17).

Qing Ming is a traditional Chinese festival marked by the cleaning of graves as a sign of respect and honour for deceased relatives.

It falls on April 4 this year and rituals can be carried out two weeks before or after the actual date.

Separately, the committee said 1,223,080 individuals in Sarawak had registered for the Covid-19 vaccination as of 8am Wednesday (March 17).

Of the total, 788,012 individuals registered through divisional Resident's Offices and 435,068 through the MySejahtera mobile application. Residents are the heads of administrative divisions in Sarawak.
