Driver meets deceased's family to seek forgiveness

IPOH: A man whose car crashed into an eatery in Kampar resulting in the death of a cook has sought forgiveness from the deceased's family.

The 54-year-old man from Klang who lost his right leg in an accident two years ago visited the house of 59-year-old Wong Kwai Yung on Station Road for 10 minutes on Wednesday (Feb 24) to pay his last respects.

Keranji assemblyman Chong Zhemin persuaded the man to come over after Wong's son said he would accept an apology.

"I was at the house to make some contributions and to see how I could help the family. So when her son told me this, I immediately called the driver and told him to come over.

"He was initially reluctant as he was scared of the family members' reaction, but after telling him it would be okay, then he came," said Chong on Saturday (Feb 27) in a Facebook post.

Chong said the man apologised to Wong's husband and son at the entrance, before kneeling down before the coffin, seeking forgiveness from the deceased.

"He started to hit his head hard on the floor and I had to stop him," added Chong.

On Tuesday (Feb 23), Wong died on the spot due to head injuries and another cook aged 50 sustained light injuries in the incident.

Police said the driver was trying to park his car in front of the shop in Jalan Batu Sinar when he accidentally stepped on the accelerator, causing the car to lurch forward.
