PETALING JAYA: Former Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof (pic) has been appointed as the new chairman of the Advocates and Solicitors Disciplinary Board.
According to the official Board website at www.asdb.org.my, Ariff’s appointment took effect on Feb 19.
He replaced Datuk Abdul Raman Saad, who retired on Feb 18.
Under the Legal Profession Act, 1976, the appointment is made by the Chief Judge of Malaya and he must be a person who is qualified to be at least a judge of the High Court.
Ariff retired as a Court of Appeal judge in January 2015.
Called to the English Bar in 1974 and the Malaysian Bar in 1985, Ariff is now in legal practice as a consultant of Chooi & Company + Cheang & Ariff.
From 1974 to 1985, he was an associate professor and deputy dean of the law faculty of Universiti Malaya.
When contacted, former Board member, Datuk Roger Tan described his appointment as a perfect choice.
“Ariff has all the knowledge, experience, standing and judicial temperament fit for the job which requires him to uphold public interest and at the same time to stay impartial and fair to lawyers whose reputation and livelihood are at stake," said Tan.
The Board was established in 1992 and is independent of the Bar Council. It adjudicates on complaints of professional misconduct by a lawyer, pupil or foreign lawyer practising in Peninsular Malaysia.
