Having a beef: Maqis seize 126,400kg of potatoes from Germany

JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) has seized a container ferrying some 126,400kg of potatoes from Germany at the Tanjung Pelepas Port (PTP) here.

Johor Maqis director Nur Afifah A. Rahman said the container was seized at around 11am on Friday (Feb 19).

“Checks by Maqis enforcement officers at the location found that the importer had issued confusing documents for the goods, where the address of the exporter was different from the one declared in its permit.

"The potatoes were seized for further action and investigations," she said in a statement here on Sunday (Feb 21).

She said the case is being investigated under Section 13 of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011 (Act 728) for presenting confusing documents.

The offence is punishable with a fine of not more than RM50,000, or jail term of not more than two years, or both.

Nur Afifah urged exporters and importers to adhere to the regulations outlined by the government to present the spread of diseases in animals and plants as well as to safe guard food security.
