MELAKA: The Melaka Chief Minister is the latest to be impersonated by a scammer, a day after the Melaka Historic City Mayor and the head of a local authority lodged police reports over similar impersonations of themselves.
Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali (pic) said, in a statement Thursday (Feb 18), that he views the attempts to manipulate his profile picture to solicit funds as well as donations as irresponsible and a serious offence.
He said the act had also sullied his reputation apart from leading to losses suffered by innocent people.
The impersonation, he said, would also cause confusion as his profile picture had been misused on social media in an attempt to deceive the people.
Sulaiman said his office is monitoring the illegal act and wouldn't hesitate to initiate legal action if the scammer continues to solicit funds by misusing the picture of Chief Minister.
He said a police report would be also lodged.
Sulaiman also appealed to public not to easily trust social media accounts using his picture.
On Wednesday, Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) Mayor Datuk Zainal Abu and Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ) president Datuk Shadan Othman had lodged separate police reports against scammers for faking their identities in attempts to deceive the public.
Both reports were lodged on Wednesday after unknown individuals had fraudulently misused their WhatsApp profile pictures to solicit funds as well as attempt to borrow money from the locals.
