Melaka mayor, Hang Tuah Jaya council head president lodge reports over impersonation by scammers

MELAKA: Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) mayor Datuk Zainal Abu and Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ) president Datuk Shadan Othman have lodged separate police reports against scammers for faking their identities in attempts to cheat the public.

Both reports were lodged on Wednesday (Feb 17) after unknown individuals had fraudulently misused their WhatsApp profile pictures to solicit funds as well as attempt to borrow money from locals.

Zainal, in a statement, urged the public to be cautious of WhatsApp messages sent in a bid to solicit funds.

He also hoped that anyone receiving such messages with his picture would lodge a police report or contact the MBMB office immediately.

Meanwhile, Shadan said he had received numerous calls after a scammer sent messages appealing for RM4,900, purportedly to buy furniture for a religious school here.

The scammer had also sent messages to several individuals who are known to Shadan, asking for money using a WhatsApp account with Shadan's picture as its profile.

Melaka Commercial Crime chief Supt E. Sundra Rajan confirmed both the reports.

He said investigations are ongoing to trace the culprits.
