PUTRAJAYA: The independent committee advising the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the state of emergency should only recommend ending it if they are fully convinced that Covid-19 is no longer a threat, says Parti Pejuang Tanah Air.
“We do not want the emergency to be lifted just so that an election can be held for political continuity and survival.
“The members must be truly convinced that the pandemic is under control and make appropriate recommendations based on clear information, facts and figures, ” said Pejuang pro-tem president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.
A 19-member committee led by former chief justice Tun Arifin Zakaria has been appointed to the special independent committee.
It was set up under Section 2 of the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021 to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on how long the state of emergency is needed.
On Jan 12, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah decreed for a state of emergency to be in force until Aug 1 as a proactive measure to contain the pandemic.
On Pejuang’s application to be registered as a political party, Mukhriz said after fulfilling the stipulated conditions in its application, there should be no further delay with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).
He said the party had communicated with the ROS after its earlier attempt to register the party was rejected.
“Our application had been submitted to the policy division of the Home Ministry, which had asked us to amend three items in our proposed constitution. That has been done and we have re-submitted the papers, ” he said during a video press conference.
