MELAKA: A catfish farm owner from Masjid Tanah here was slapped with a RM12,000 fine for causing serious pollution to Sungai Baru in Alor Gajah by dumping chicken carcasses and rotten eggs in the waterway.
Melaka Agriculture, Agro-based, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee said the compound was issued on Monday (Feb 15).
“The offence of polluting the river was committed in February last year," he said when met at his Pengkalan Batu service centre here on Tuesday (Feb 16).
Norhizam said the act had also caused the rich aquatic fauna to die and the state government had to undertake efforts to rehabilitate the river.
“The water quality of the river also deteriorated and residents nearby had to put up with a foul smell for three days, ” he said.
Norhizam said the compound was issued under Section 39(a) of the Melaka Water Supply Enactment 2014.
He added that the farm owner may face a maximum RM125,000 compound if the offence is repeated.
