Eight nabbed for gathering at homestay to gamble during MCO

GEORGE TOWN: Eight individuals, seven men and a woman, were arrested for gathering and gambling at a homestay in Persiaran Karpal Singh in the wee hours of Wednesday (Feb 3).

The individuals, aged from 20 to 40 years old, were caught during a 2.30am operation by the Penang police contingent headquarters (IPK) alongside the anti-vice, gambling and secret societies division (D7) team.

State Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Asst Comm Rahimi Ra’ais said they seized playing cards, dice and RM13,000 cash.

“Police also found a notebook involving illegal loan activities from one of the individuals.

“We believe the group rented the homestay to obscure themselves, but we managed to track them as a result of public surveillance and intelligence," he said.

SAC Rahimi said besides gambling offences, all eight individuals were found to have violated the ongoing movement control order.

“All of them were brought to the north-east district police headquarters for further investigation.

“They are currently under remand and will be investigated under Section 6 (1) of the Open Gaming House Act 1953 and under Section 16 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act (Act 342)," he said.

SAC Rahimi added that one of the individuals found to be involved with illegal loan activities will be investigated under Section 5(2) of the Money Lending Act 1951 as well.
