Penang cops arrest three mat rempit for illegal racing

BUTTERWORTH: Three mat rempit were caught red-handed here by the police during Ops Samseng Jalanan on Saturday (Jan 30)

The trio, aged from 15 to 17, were spotted racing each other at about 6pm.

North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor said their dangerous antics threatened the safety of other road users.

"They were racing with each other from Sungai Dua to Tasek Gelugor.

"When they arrived at Jalan Air Hitam, a team of police arrested them," he said in a statement on Sunday (Jan 31).

He added one of the youths, aged 17, was a school dropout while the other two were still schooling.

The youths will be investigated under reckless and dangerous riding under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of up to five years or a RM15,000 fine.

ACP Noorzainy said during the same operation, five men aged from 18 to 22 were fined RM1,000 each for violating the movement control order.

He said the men attempted to inter-district travel without approval from authorities and were compounded under Regulation 4(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease Regulations 2020.
