PUTRAJAYA: An Umno leader has openly asked Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to relinquish his position as party president, claiming that lack of leadership and direction has resulted in members to be dispirited.
Paya Besar division chief Datuk Ahmad Tajuddin Sulaiman said actions by some supreme council members and its party MPs were not in line with Umno’s stand on issues and policies.
“This has exposed the party to attacks and resulted in the Malays losing their confidence in the party.
“The fact is that we sorely need their support in the 15th General Election, ” he said in a statement on Friday (Jan 22).
Ahmad Tajuddin also pointed out that prosecution on misconduct against Umno leaders is a “heavy burden that hinders efforts for Umno to rise again”.
“For the sake of the Malays, Umno, the tenacity and determination of the party’s 3.6 million members, it is only right for Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid to relinquish his responsibilities as Umno president, ” he said.
There are already calls made earlier for a change in Umno leadership, including by the Federal Territories and Pontian Umno Youth chiefs.
