Dimsum floats new channel USilk

PETALING JAYA: Dimsum Entertainment will be launching a new channel USilk, in partnership with China Intercontinental Communication Center (CICC), to bring documentaries from China to its viewers. Star Media Group’s Dimsum Entertainment chief marketing officer Lam Swee Kim said USilk, which will be launched this month, will feature high-quality documentary series jointly produced by the CICC and 16 international media partners.

These series will provide valuable insight into the culture and cultural products of China’s hotspots, including Xinjiang, Guangdong, Jiangnan and the Silk Road, she said.

CICC was established in 1993, with the objective of “helping the world to understand China, and helping China to understand the world” and has collaborated with National Geographic, Al-Jazeera and BBC to co-produce documentaries centred around China.

Lam said they are looking forward to embarking on a few initiatives with CICC.

The first, Lam said, will include content-sharing for broadcast in its respective countries and in the Asean region.

“Documentaries and short content on culture, technology, economic and social development will be part of the content mix which will appeal to audiences.

“The second initiative will include possible co-production of culture, food, travel and human interest content. It will also bring talents from different countries together to discuss ideas, ” she said in a statement yesterday.

Among the documentaries which will be featured on USilk are Tofu Legends, a seven-episode mini-series which focuses on the importance of tofu to the Chinese people; Overwintering, an hour-long documentary that follows the life of China’s native black-necked crane and The Great Master Craftsmen III, a series revolving around the bonds between master craftsmen and their apprentices.

Additionally, USilk will also feature In China: Mission SOJOURNey, a documentary where domestic and international stars explore Chinese hospitality, tradition and culture via specially-arranged homestays.

There will also be a special Chinese New Year line-up featuring titles such as A Bite of Guangdong, Flavours of Xinjiang, Chinese New Year, and Tofu Legends: Origins.

Dimsum Entertainment is a video-on-demand service operated by SMG Entertainment Sdn Bhd, part of the Star Media Group focusing on Asian content delivered via mobile applications, TV applications and web browsers.
