Health Ministry: 2,643 new cases for 131,108 total, 16 new fatalities bring death toll to 537

PETALING JAYA: The country recorded 2,643 new Covid-19 cases as at noon Friday (Jan 8), bringing the total number of infections nationwide to 131,108.

There were also 16 new deaths, the highest daily total recorded so far, bringing the death toll to 537.

Of the 2,643 new cases, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 2,641 cases were locally transmitted and two were imported cases.

"For the locally transmitted cases, 1,666 cases involved Malaysians and 975 cases were foreigners," he said in a statement on Friday (Jan 8).

Dr Noor Hisham said Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 1,086, followed by Sabah and Johor at 401 and 298 respectively.

Dr Noor Hisham said of the 1,086 cases, 904 were from clusters and close contact screenings.

He added that 79 cases, meanwhile, were detected from lock-up, immigration detention depot, and prisons involving the Jalan Harapan Prison cluster (73 cases), Pagar Sipur cluster (3), Choh Tembok cluster (2), and the Tembok Gajah cluster (1).

"There are 170 Covid-19 cases being treated in intensive care units (ICU), with 82 cases requiring ventilator support," he said.

Dr Noor Hisham also said that there were currently 25,140 active Covid-19 cases in the country.

He said 2,708 patients were discharged, bringing the total cumulative number to 105,431.
