PETALING JAYA: Umno must decide its political cooperation and direction carefully if the party decides to sever ties with Parti Bersatu Pribumi Malaysia (Bersatu), says Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.
The Foreign Minister and former Umno vice-president said he was even willing to relinquish his Cabinet posts should the party order all Umno ministers to do so.
"This is because the decision which will be decided will eventually determine the rise and fall of Umno, impact our values and the struggle of the party as well as the party's position in the upcoming general election
"If the party decides not to continue working with Bersatu, Umno must decide who we will cooperate with in GE15. Is it with DAP? Is it with PKR? Or just on its own?" he said in a statement on Wednesday (Jan 6).
The Umno supreme council is set to meet tonight at Putra World Trade Center (PWTC) in a highly-anticipated meeting to discuss, among others, the cooperation with Bersatu.
The Sembrong MP said that Umno must make the political planning carefully considering that the general election is not near.
"Umno must do it carefully with full responsibility and wisdom," he added.
He noted that the party must learn the lesson that Brisan only won 79 seats during the 14th general election from the 133 seats they won in the 13th general election.
"It means that we lost 54 seats. We must always learn from this experience," he said.
The senior Umno leader said the country was still facing the Covid-19 pandemic, while recording high daily cases.
"At the same time, we are also facing floods. Our economy is slowly recovering and those who are impacted by it are increasing," he said, adding that Umno must set an example and take the chance to show that it is concerned over the people's welfare.
Hishammuddin also noted that Umno leaders were given the chance to helm several coveted Cabinet posts, including the Defence Ministry, which is tasked to protect safety and to stop the spread of Covid-19.
"From my point of view, this is the hope of the people towards the Umno leadership. Not just endlessly fighting over power.
"In the end, the rakyat will suffer and lose confidence," he added.
"To the Umno supreme council that will meet tonight, let the party and rakyat know what Umno actually wants. Make the best decision," added Hishammuddin.
