KOTA KINABALU: The position of Umno in the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)-led state government will not be affected by the development within Barisan Nasional at the federal level, says Datuk Bung Moktar Radin.
"Our position (Sabah Umno) is to defend the GRS state government at all times. It is a Sabah Umno position," said the Sabah Umno chief when asked if the developments would affect party relations with GRS partners that includes Sabah Perikatan.
Bung, who is Sabah Deputy Chief Minister and Kinabatangan MP, was commenting on Umno's removal of Tan Sri Annuar Musa as Barisan secretary-general.
Bung said there was no doubt that the move would create ripples among the party grassroots but reiterated that Sabah Umno's stand is clear to protect and defend the GRS government that won the state in the Sept 26 Sabah polls.
Bung said that the so-called order to ask Umno leaders to quit their positions in the Perikatan-led Federal Government by March was fake news.
"I was told (by senior party members) it is not true," he added.
On a question of how Sabah Umno would be able to reconcile its position within GRS if the national Umno level decides to break ties with the Perikatan coalition, he replied: "We leave it to the party president (Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi). He is a wise man."
Sabah Umno (Barisan Nasional) teamed up with Sabah Bersatu (Perikatan Nasional) and PBS in the state elections to defeat the then ruling Warisan Plus state government led by by Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
Sabah Bersatu chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor was appointed Chief Minister following the elections.
"We (GRS) just won the elections, our focus is on developing the state," Bung said.
Annuar was replaced by Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan as Barisan secretary-general.
