Tok Mat: Barisan open to accepting other parties

NILAI: Barisan Nasional is open to accepting any party which wants to join the coalition, says its deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

However, he said a consensus must be reached among its four component parties – Umno, MIC, MCA and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) – before approval would be given.

“We must be inclusive and not exclusive anymore. So, if you ask for my personal opinion, the more parties under the Barisan umbrella, the better, because each has its own strength and combined, will provide added synergy.

“This is what we have to do for Barisan to build new strength because we lost in the 14th General Election. Whatever Barisan stands for and its policies, there needs to be a review so that its two directions, which are strengthening the coalition and strategies for winning GE15, can be realised, ” he said.

Mohamad told reporters this after opening Parti Makkal Sakti Malaysia’s 12th annual general meeting here yesterday.

Commenting on Makkal Sakti president Datuk Seri R.S. Thanenthiran’s request for the party to contest under the Barisan ticket in three parliamentary and seven state seats at the next general election, Mohamad, who is also Umno deputy president, said this should be considered.

He said this was because Makkal Sakti had been a loyal friend to Barisan during good and tough times although its status was not that of a component party.

“Makkal Sakti is a Barisan partner and not a component but consideration should be given because Makkal Sakti has long helped Barisan – whether it was the government or no longer government.

“I am confident that consideration can be given by Barisan’s highest leadership council on this request by Makkal Sakti.

“There are other partners who have stated the same. I’m of the view that with more parties onboard with Barisan, the more inclusive it will be but I leave it to the wisdom of Barisan’s top leadership, ” he said.

Earlier, in his speech, Thanenthiran asked that Barisan give Makkal Sakti a chance to contest seats in GE15.

“This is our hope and we are ready. If not GE15, then when?” he said.

The AGM, which was attended by 753 delegates, also adopted three resolutions – for Makkal Sakti to become a Barisan component, to contest under Barisan in GE15 and on the well-being of the Indian community in Sabah. — Bernama
