KOTA KINABALU: An allocation of RM11.26mil has been set aside for the Heart of Borneo (HoB) conservation effort for Sabah and Sarawak under the 12th Malaysian Plan (RMK-12) in 2021.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah (pic) said this is vital for the continuity of the HoB initiative for the sustainability of forest management and conservation of biodiversity in these two Borneon states, and Malaysia in general.
“The Borneo states are rich in flora and fauna. We have seen the total protected area in Sabah reaching 125,865 ha whereas in Sarawak, it is 2.7 ha at present, ” he said in a statement.
He said this is made possible with the federal commitment to assist in the HoB initiatives over the past 13 years since it was introduced in 2007.
The HoB initiative was signed by Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia with a total of 20 million ha of land area to be dedicated for the HoB initiative.
Dr Shamsul thanked both the Sabah and Sarawak government for the continuous commitment to see to the success of the initiative.
Among past programmes held for the HoB initiative are meetings, seminars and information sharing on how to better preserve and conserve the environment.
