KOTA KINABALU: An eight-year-old boy was killed in a crocodile attack while swimming with a friend in a river in Lahad Datu on Thursday (Dec 10).

Lahad Datu OCPD Asst Comm Rohan Shah Ahmad said in the 1.30pm incident, the boy was swimming in Sungai Sabah Baru with a friend when the reptile attacked.

“The friend, who is also an eight-year-old boy, immediately swam to shore and ran to the victim’s father nearby for help after seeing the attack, ” he said in a statement, Friday.

He said a search was later mounted for the victim and he was found not far from where he was last seen at about 3.30pm.

“There were severe injuries on the boy’s body including his waist, chest and stomach, ” ACP Rohan said, adding that the boy’s body has been taken for a post-mortem.

This is the second crocodile attack reported in Sabah over the past week, as a teenager escaped death when he was attacked by the reptile in Sungai Mengkabong Tuaran on Dec 4

He managed to escape with injuries thanks to his friends who had come together to attack the crocodile and chase it away.

Traps have been set up to catch the reptile but it has yet to be caught.
