KOTA KINABALU: The Tawau Society For The Prevention of Cruelty To Animals (SPCA) is seeking donations to run its animal shelter housing over 500 cats and dogs following limitation of funds due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
The shelter at Jalan Kau Sing, Mile 6 has been operating based on contributions by certain quarters and the public, said Tawau SPCA volunteer Lee Shiau Lean.
However during the pandemic, funding has dropped tremendously as contributors have also been affected economically.
She said the district SPCA could collect over RM20,000 monthly pre-Covid-19 time, but at present, even to get RM10,000 to buy food and cover operating costs at the shelter for all the rescued animals proved to be difficult.
"In the past, we could have organised many programmes like an annual charity run, but now these things have to be postponed," she said.
Despite the challenges, the shelter recently accepted over 50 stray animals, including from Semporna and Kunak.
"While we are struggling, we are fortunate some people still contribute to help with out food expenses, about RM300 a day on average," Lee added.
She said that anyone who wishes to contribute can obtain information via SPCA Tawau's Facebook account.
The contributions collected also go to paying the rent for the shelter's site as well as the salaries of six workers.
She expressed hope that the government could allocate some subsidy funding to run animal shelters.
