Melaka exco members to take 10% pay cut to help the jobless, says CM

MELAKA: Melaka's executive councillors will take a 10% pay cut for a year to help locals who are jobless, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali (pic).

Sulaiman (BN-Lendu) told the state assembly proceedings on Wednesday (Dec 9) that the amount from the pay cut is meant to be channelled towards the Melaka Disaster Fund, which will assist those who were badly impacted by Covid-19 financially.

"All exco members have agreed to take the pay cut from January to December, 2021," he said.

Earlier, the assembly was told that the unemployment rate in the state recorded an increase for the second quarter of this year.

Melaka unity, human resources and consumer affairs committee chairman Datuk AR Ismail Othman said 9,700 individuals were jobless, compared with 5,000 in the first quarter, which translated to a 2.2-point increase.

Ismail (BN-Kuala Linggi) also told the assembly that 1,000 graduates in the state are unable to secure employment.
