MELAKA: Melaka police have detained seven youths for allegedly being involved t in promoting illegal online gambling websites.
Melaka CID Chief Asst Comm Mohd Sukri Kaman said police personnel detained the suspects during raids at two condominium units in Jalan Ong Kim Wee on Thursday (Dec 3).
He said all seven were aged between 18 and 23 and police successfully raided the premises after one week of surveillance.
"All of them had no previous criminal records," he said on Sunday (Dec 6).
ACP Mohd Sukri said the suspects were offered a monthly salary between RM2000 to RM2,500 by an online gambling syndicate.
"Their roles were to promote the websites through social media platforms to Malaysians," he said, adding that the seven just started operating a month ago.
ACP Sukri said police also confiscated several electronic devices, mobile phones, cash as well as access cards to the condominium units.
He said all seven have been remanded to assist in investigations.
