EC to meet Nov 27 to discuss Gerik, Bugaya by-elections

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting on Friday (Nov 27) to discuss the Gerik and Bugaya by-elections, says its secretary.

Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said the Dewan Rakyat and the Sabah state assembly have received official notification on the vacancy of the two seats, following the death of their incumbents.

“The special meeting will be chaired by EC chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh and will discuss the important dates of the by-elections, including nomination day and polling day, as well as other related preparations, ” said Ikmalrudin in a statement Tuesday (Nov 24).

The incumbent Gerik MP Datuk Hasbullah Osman, 63, died of a heart attack on Nov 16. A day after that, the assemblyman for the Bugaya seat in Sabah, Manis Muka Mohd Darah, passed away.

Questions remain on whether the two by-elections will be held, following the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s declaration of an emergency to postpone the Batu Sapi by-election that was scheduled for Dec 5.

The decision was made in light of the severity of Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
