MIRI: Sarawak is preparing food aid for at least 185,000 people living in flood-prone districts as the landas (monsoon) season enters its peak next month.
According to Welfare Department circulars, food aid deployment bases are being set up in Kuching, Miri, Bintulu and Kapit.
The centre in Kuching would serve as the focal point for food distribution for flood victims in southern Sarawak.
The one in Kapit would function as the coordination centre for food aid distribution for central Sarawak while the remaining two would handle distribution in the north.
In northern Sarawak, the major flood-prone settlements are located in the remote Baram and Marudi districts.
Late last year, up to 30,000 people in Baram were affected by floods that reached as high as two metres during their peak.
The landas season brings prolonged torrential rain and floods with the weather already getting bad all over the state since early this month.
