Sarawak in full-scale flood preparation.
MIRI: District offices throughout Sarawak have been directed to channel all resources to prepare for floods even as Sarawakians deal with the third wave of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.
The Sarawak Disaster Relief Management Committee headquarters in Kuching has issued the directive to all the district offices throughout the state to prepare boats and land vehicles for flood evacuation.
The directive also includes guidelines for the setting up of flood evacuation centres, in both urban and rural locations.
Since Wednesday (Nov 18), district officers were busy holding meetings to fully prepare for the height of the landas (monsoon) season.
"All agencies in charge of flood evacuation transportation must limit the number of evacuees allowed in each vehicle.
"Each evacuation centre can only take in a limited number of evacuees as stipulated by the Covid-19 standard operating procedure," the directive said.
The district offices have rounded up all agencies and departments involved in flood-preparation and mitigation for daily meetings.
These bodies include the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Unit, police, army, Welfare Department, Public Works Department and Rela Corps.
The landas is expected to be in its full-scale strength from December to March and is expected to bring torrential rain and severe floods.
Parts of northern rural Sarawak like Baram are already experiencing heavy rain and floods during this inter-monsoon period.
