KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat has declared the Gerik parliamentary seat vacant, paving the way for a by-election in Perak.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun gave notice of the vacancy of the seat held by Datuk Hasbullah Osman who passed away in Raub on Monday (Nov 16).
Azhar said the vacancy notice was done in line with Article 54 of the Federal Constitution, which will now require the Election Commission (EC) to fix a date for the by-election to be held within 60 days after declaring the seat vacant.
Hasbullah held the the Gerik parliamentary seat for two terms after defeating PAS contenders in the general elections in 2013 and 2018.
He was also Temengor state assemblyman from 2004 to 2013.
