GEORGE TOWN: A 32-year-old suspect was arrested after a video clip showing a man attempting to snatch a sling bag from a wheelchair-bound man went viral.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said in the 9.30am incident on Saturday (Nov 14), the victim, who is homeless, was chatting with his female friend in Lebuh Cina when the suspect joined them.

"The suspect suddenly tried to grab the victim's sling bag but the victim resisted.

"A scuffle ensued and the suspect hit the victim's face several times before running away," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 17).

In the one-minute and 22-second video, a woman is then seen coming to the victim's aid, but the suspect managed to escape – without the bag – on a motorcycle ridden by an accomplice.

ACP Soffian said the suspect, who was the pillion rider, was detained at about 10.30am on Saturday in Lorong Stewart here.

"Police also confiscated a motorcycle that was used in the incident.

"The victim suffered minor injuries to his face.

"The suspect, who has a drug and criminal record, was sent to Penang Hospital because he had tuberculosis and internal bleeding in his stomach," he said.

ACP Soffian said police were currently looking for the suspect's accomplice and the case is investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt while committing a robbery.
