Mersing fisherman feared drowned after hitting head in fall from jetty

MERSING: A 25-year-old fisherman is feared drowned after he fell while trying to get onto a boat at the Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) jetty in Endau here.

Endau Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Mohd Alias Hussin said fishermen were unloading their catch of the day at the jetty when the victim fell into the river around 8.30am on Thursday (Oct 29).

“The victim was trying to hop onto a boat when he slipped and hit his head on the side of the boat before falling into the river.

“A team of eight firemen and 10 personnel from the Water Rescue Unit (PPDA) were deployed to look for the victim.

“We are searching in areas around the jetty, about 200m from the Sungai Endau river mouth to one kilometre upstream,” he said in a statement.

Alias said the search and rescue team were being assisted by other fishermen.

He added that a team of firemen and PPDA personnel from the Mersing Tebrau Fire and Rescue Departments were on their way to the scene to provide additional help.
