Umno Youth reiterates calls for political truce, cooperation

Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki

PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth is calling for a political truce to collectively combat Covid-19 and check the economic downturn.

Its chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki called on politicians across the divide to temporarily stop attempts to wrest control of the premiership.

"Politicians should read between the lines and stop playing politics that could destroy the nation and burden the rakyat," he said.

Asyraf said Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had also called for a political ceasefire and reconciliation.

In keeping with Zahid's call, he called upon Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to initiate pre-parliamentary engagement with all political party presidents across the divide to ensure Budget 2021 would be passed for the sake of the rakyat.

He suggested Muhyiddin set up a special committee comprising representatives from across the political divide to address issues related to Covid-19.

"Hold periodic bipartisan engagement, focussing on all measures that could be taken to help the rakyat overcome economic downturn, ” he said in a statement.

Asyraf also called upon rivals to temporarily cease manoeuvring attempts to wrest power until the battle against the Covid-19 pandemic was over, and the economic downturn checked.

He also urged other parties to let Parti Warisan Sabah retain the Batu Sapi parliamentary seat uncontested, to avoid a by-election during the pandemic.
