KUANTAN: A factory worker’s hope of owning a car was dashed after he was cheated in a scam on social media.
Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof said the 46-year-old victim claimed he paid RM4,600 as advance payment to purchase a car in Singapore, which was advertised for sale on Facebook on Oct 2.
He said the victim called a contact number provided on the post to discuss the sale and was asked to pay a deposit.
“The victim claimed he made the payment and the remaining payment was to be made after receiving the car.
“After receiving the deposit, the suspect called the victim to make another payment. However, the victim refused to do so, ” he told reporters here yesterday.
Mohd Wazir said the victim, who became suspicious at that point, tried contacting the suspect to get back his advance payment, but found that his phone number had been blocked.
The victim lodged a report at the Kuantan district police headquarters yesterday and investigations are under way. — Bernama
