No Emergency: Anwar expresses appreciation to King

PETALING JAYA: PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his appreciation for the decision taken by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah not to declare an Emergency.

“I have also taken the advice of the King that politicians - including parliamentarians - should not be excessively politicking, must be followed, ” he said.

He added that politicians must shoulder their duties according to the spirit of the Constitution, and out of responsibility to the rakyat, the Parliament institution, and the country, in a way that still plays a strong check and balance to issues related to justice and anti-corruption matters.

“In light of this spirit, we will be able to realise a plan to handle the Covid-19 pandemic, unemployment problems, and poverty rates, as well as generating economic growth in a systematic and effective manner.

“Daulat Tuanku, ” he said.

On the royal decision not to declare a statement of emergency, Anwar said: I welcome and appreciate the wisdom and discernment by His Majesty, and the Malay Rulers over their statement, stance and views regarding the Prime Minister and his Cabinet minister’s intention to declare a state of emergency.

“The historical decision and resolution by the King to reject the proposal of the Prime Minister and his Cabinet ministers to declare an emergency clearly strengthens the system of a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy, ”

The Port Dickson MP added that the decision was made based on the spirit of the Constitution and it was proved to be understanding of the rakyat’s opinion not to have their democratic system eroded, which had been voiced out by politicians, civil society, academicians and the media.
