KEPALA BATAS (Bernama): The police have arrested three individuals believed to have stolen a police patrol vehicle from the Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district police headquarters (IPD) here.

The vehilce, which went missing Saturday (Oct 24) night, was found in Shah Alam, Selangor, early Monday (Oct 25).

According to a source, two brothers aged 28 and 32 fled with the vehicle, an MPV, after claiming that they were policemen from the information technology resource division and were there to check on the dashboard camera in the vehicle.

"It happened very fast and within minutes, the men were out of the IPD compound, without raising any suspicion," he said.

He said the supervisor (a policeman with the rank of sergeant), only realised that the vehicle had been stolen half an hour later when the suspects did not return to the IPD and could not be contacted.

The vehicle was found several hours later in Shah Alam, Selangor and police arrested a male suspect as well as a woman in her 20s, believed to be his girlfriend, who were in the car.

Following the arrest, the younger brother of the first suspect was detained in Tasek Gelugor.

"Investigations found that the suspect had initially picked up his girlfriend in Tasek Gelugor, and it is believed the couple had made an attempt to rob a grocery store before driving to Shah Alam, ” he said, adding that the suspect stole the car to impress his girlfriend.

Police investigations also found that the main suspect had been arrested on Oct 15 for stealing electric cables and both siblings had past criminal records, including drug convictions.

According to the source, the siblings were hardcore drug addicts and investigations also revealed that the main suspect who fled with the MPV has mental health problems.

Meanwhile, SPU district police chief ACP Noorzainy Mohd Noor when contacted confirmed the incident adding that investigations were ongoing under Section 379A and 170 of the Penal Code. – Bernama
