Prison visits suspended nationwide; communication via phone, apps allowed

PETALING JAYA: The Prisons Department will be suspending all visits to prisons nationwide starting Wednesday (Oct 14), until further notice in efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19.

In a statement, the department inmates will not be able to receive family visits nor visits from lawyers, the police, embassy officials and NGOs.

"This is among measures taken to limit the contact between inmates and others to prevent the spread of Covid-19," a spokesman said.

The spokesman also said inmates can communicate with visitors including their lawyers through the prison's WARTEL prepaid phone service or through video conferencing tools such as Zoom or Skype.
